President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent this letter to C. F. Drake, editor of the Chicago Cubs News. FDR shared his approval of the Cubs' decision to commemorate the founding of the National League 60 years prior by playing an old time baseball game played under the rules of 1876. The President wrote: "Baseball has been called the national pastime and rightly so because it stands for the fair play, clean living and good sportsmanship which are our national heritage. That is why it has such a warm place in our hearts."
FDR was writing in response to a letter from C. F. Drake, included here, asking for a comment on what baseball means to the nation, to be printed in a future issue of the Chicago Cubs News. The first page of the July 7, 1936 issue that Drake included as a sample is shown here. Roosevelt's letter was included in the August 19, 1936 issue.
