This illustration by cartoonist Clifford Berryman appeared in the Washington Post on Flag Day, 1904. It shows Uncle Sam instructing schoolchildren that the American flag, unlike the office of the Vice President – which he ridicules in a kindly manner – is to be held dear to their hearts. With the 1904 Presidential nominating conventions about to begin, it's a clear reference to Berryman's low regard for the office of Vice President. Berryman's teddy bear takes a bow as he stands beside Uncle Sam.
Clifford Berryman was one of Washington, DC's best-known cartoonists in the early to mid-1900s. He drew for the Washington Post and Evening Star newspapers. His cartoons touched on a variety of subjects including politics, elections, and both World Wars.

Children, this is our flag. Do not treat it as though it were only the Vice-Presidency. Take hold of it and never desert its followers.Your Uncle Samuel
