Historians have characterized the 1920's as a period of increased discrimination and intolerance toward minority groups. Government agents raided "Red nests"; KKK members tarred, feathered, and lynched those who disagreed with them; southern railroad companies continued to isolate black passengers in Jim Crow cars; and individual citizens expressed anger at ethnic minorities in public and private correspondence.
