Captain Manuel “Jay” S. Vargas, commanded Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, during a three-day battle near Dai Do, Vietnam, from April 30 to May 2, 1968. Despite his wounds, he was able to give calm, cool orders to his men. This award recommendation was sent to the Secretary of the Navy for approval and began the process that resulted in a Medal of Honor for CPT Vargas.
