In December 1944 Douglas MacArthur was promoted to General of the Army. He is one of only five people to achieve that rank, along with George Marshall (1944), Dwight D. Eisenhower (1944), Henry Arnold (1944), and Omar Bradley (1950). He was appointed supreme allied commander, Southwest Pacific, in 1945.
