This 1884 photograph of the Washington Monument details the scaffolding needed during the placement of the aluminum capstone at the top. The monument was completed on December 6, 1884, and the cornerstone was laid on Independence Day, 1848. The monument is 555 feet tall and sits in the middle of the National Mall, midway between the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial.
