This document comes from the records of the President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services. The committee was established by Executive Order 9981, on July 26, 1948, to recommend revisions in military regulations in order to implement the Government's policy of desegregation of the armed services — that there was to be equality of treatment and opportunity for all members of the armed forces, regardless of race, color, religion, or national origin. The seven-member advisory committee, which was chaired by Charles Fahy, was more commonly known as the Fahy Committee.
