On March 7, 1945, the American 9th Armored Division seized the Ludendorff railroad bridge, the last remaining bridge across the Rhine at Remagen, Germany. Sgt. Eugene Dorland and other engineers raced to cut the demolition wires before the Germans could destroy the bridge. They succeeded, thus allowing the American Army to continue its advance across Germany. Dorland later sketched this drawing of the bridge and its defenses. German positions are shown on the left side of the drawing. The Americans approached from the right.
