On April 9, 1933, the first of the Scottsboro boys brought to trial, Haywood Patterson, was found guilty. It was later learned that it took only five minutes for the jury to reach a decision. The defense immediately filed a motion with Judge Horton for a new trial.
While awaiting the judge’s decision, the National Scottsboro Action Committee planned a march on Washington, D.C., in support of the Scottsboro Boys for early May. In a letter to the President, the committee asked for a meeting with the President to urge presidential intervention and adoption of a civil rights bill for African-Americans.
