In this letter, Congressman Stockman relates the good work Dr. Ruth Gruber performed at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter and the esteem in which she was held by the refugees there.
Dr. Ruth Gruber was a field representative working for Interior Secretary Harold Ickes during the period prior to and during the establishment of the Emergency Refugee Shelter at Ft. Ontario, NY. She was one of the representatives sent to Italy to select refugees for the shelter and to accompany them to New York. On the voyage to the United States, Gruber recorded the stories of the refugees which she later compiled into a book Haven: The Dramatic Story of 1,000 World War II Refugees and How They Came to America.
In June 1945, Congressman Lowell Stockman (R. OR) visited Ft. Ontario as a member of the House Immigration and Naturalization Committee. He wrote this letter to Ickes relating Gruber's work and the esteem in which she was held by the refugees there.
