This sculpture of Stonewall Jackson was erected in 1940 in on the Manassas Battlefield (Battle of Bull Run) in Virginia. The first major battle of the Civil War, it also was the conflict where Jonathan Thomas Jackson earned his nickname Stonewall. Engraved on the base is a quote attributed to Barnard Elliott Bee Jr., "There stands Jackson like a stone wall."
In 2017, following the the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville that resulted in violent clashes with counter-protestors and one death, the Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe asked localities in Virginia to consider taking down or removing monuments to more appropriate settings. The Stonewall Jackson statue on the Manassas Battlefield remained due to National Park Service policy. In October 2017, the base was vandalized with white and gold paint. In 2020, following a series of national protests against police brutality and racism in policing, the monument was again vandalized with spray paint.
