The original caption of this photograph reads: The first wave of Marines to hit the Saipan beach in the Mariames invasion take cover behind a sand dune, while waitng for the following three waves tocome in. The following waves were held off from the beach by Jap artillery and mortor fire for some time before a landing could be effected. When this first Leatherneck wave was reinforced they pushed across the island wiping out hte Japs who fought rear guard actions or acted as sinipers. The prow of a "Buffalo", one of the amphibious tractors that bourght them ashore, can be seen at the left.
