Representatives of President Andrew Jackson and Spain’s 4-year-old Queen Isabella II ended a long standing dispute in Madrid on February 17, 1834. Spain agreed to pay the United States 12 million reales to compensate American citizens whose commerce was damaged by Spanish policies. The United States agreed to drop all further claims against Spain. This treaty was ratified August 14, 1834.
