President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered all dependents of U.S. government personnel out of Vietnam in February 1965 in advance of the arrival of U.S. ground troops on March 8, 1965.
The original caption for this photograph reads: Evacuation of U.S. military and civilian dependents from Vietnam in compliance with a directive by President L.B. Johnson. U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Maxwell D. Taylor, chats with General William C. Westmoreland, Commanding General, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam at Tan Son Nhut Airport, Saigon. They were at the Airport to see part of the dependents prior to their departure to CONUS.
